Testimonials
My husband and I had a very positive experience with Jennifer as our doula. She was a great source of knowledge in the months leading up to my labor and delivery. She was patient and responsive in answering our many questions, and this helped me in creating a birth plan that was right for me. Although in the end, my labor did not end up going quite according to the birth plan, Jennifer's presence and support made the experience much more manageable. The greatest contribution Jennifer made to the outcome of my L&D experience came the morning of the birth, when I was told by my doctor that I may need a c-section due to stalled labor on account of baby's head position. Jennifer stayed calm during this trying time for me, and furthermore made use of her resources on natural labor progress to guide me in various laboring positions, which ultimately did get baby reoriented. We truly feel that we owe the natural (vaginal) delivery of our daughter to Jennifer, and I am so grateful and glad we chose to have her with us. We would not hesitate to hire her again for any future pregnancies.
—Priya S Jennifer was the first and only doula I interviewed, and right away I knew she would be a great match for me. She knows how to be quiet yet assertive, direct yet diplomatic. She is very competent and responsive. We hired her early in the process. and she gave us good advise on switching hospitals and practices. She also spent a lot of time with us, mentally preparing me and my husband for labor. I found she understands psychology of labor, and at times our sessions were like counselling, discovering and discussing our fears of labor and birth, which every expectant mother (and father!) have. I found this to be very helpful, and by delivery I was able to let go of some fears. But also knowing that I will have Jennifer by my side to guide me was very calming. Even though my attempt to go for unmedicated labor did not work out, I believe being more calm and less afraid allowed me to stay responsive and able to improvise during birth, making the best decisions for myself my specific situation.
In sum, we found Jennifer to be a very valuable guide, helping mentally prepare for the unexpected. She included my husband in the process and made sure he was OK during delivery, which was a relief for me. My husband really liked having Jennifer's support as well. We would recommend her without hesitation!
—Volha R. Jennifer has been my doula for the birth of both of my children, most recently for the birth of our daughter in September of 2012. Jennifer provided support to both me and my husband by helping us to develop the birth plan that was right for us, and making sure we were adequately prepared to follow through. I chose to have an unmedicated labor and delivery, and she helped me develop the courage and strength needed to achieve the birth we desired. She was by my side every step of the way and helped me through the process by keeping me focused, helping me utilize effective pain-management techniques, and providing emotional support. My husband was still my primary partner during the labor and delivery, and Jennifer was there as a resource and support person. She coached us through the process, essentially helping him help me, and we had a truly amazing experience together as we anticipated the arrival of our baby girl. She was also very knowledgeable with the hospital policies, standard practices, and alternate options that are not routinely communicated to the mother by staff members. She was able to explain the reason behind many of the medical actions taken or suggested by doctors and nurses, which helped me to make informed decisions and understand what would be best for me and our baby. I would enthusiastically recommend Jennifer as a doula to anybody, whether the goal is to have a natural, unmedicated delivery or to undergo a scheduled c-section. If we decide to have a third child, I would not hesitate to hire Jennifer again.
—Katie My husband and I have said, many times since the birth of our son, that without Jennifer we could not have made it through the most important and most terrifying day of our lives. Our boy was born very fast, which, on the face of it, sounds nice but was actually exhausting, painful, and horrifying. Jennifer kept a cool head throughout the whole process and provided us with the benefit of her experience. She was a calm and steady presence; she helped me deal with the flood of pain, emotion, and fear that descended upon us within minutes.
This was our first child and to be honest, neither my husband nor I were properly prepared for the delivery. We met Jennifer fairly late in the process and she immediately set about educating and preparing us for an ordeal that we could not fully appreciate. She exposed us to new ideas and helped us put into words all of the thoughts and concerns we felt but could not express. Jennifer made it possible for us to effectively communicate with the hospital staff.
Our delivery turned out to be a wonderful experience full of meaning and joy, but out of everything that Jennifer did for us, the most important contribution she gave our family was her insight into breast feeding, which has been a wonderful and defining experience for me and my son. Immediately after the delivery, Jennifer expertly coached me to nurse before either my husband or I were even aware of what was going on. Initially our son had a slightly low blood sugar count and the nurses wanted to give him some formula. Jennifer tirelessly helped me feed him and get his blood sugar up naturally—even feeding him my colostrum with a spoon. We all cheered when they reran the test and it was normal.
I would not change one single thing about the day I gave birth, and I owe a big part of this to Jennifer. She helped us when we needed it the most.
—Annie B. Jennifer was a fantastic doula for the birth of our first child. Her calm presence, seemingly boundless knowledge, and continuous support were invaluable during and after labor. My husband and I highly recommend her.
Jennifer met with us twice in the weeks leading up to my due date. During those visits, she talked with us to address (and root out) any fears or questions we had, provided creative outlets for thinking about birth to get us out of our left brains, gave us helpful hints for exercises to prepare for labor, and was generally reassuring as we approached the birth of our first. As my due date approached (and passed), Jennifer checked in periodically to see how things were going.
When I finally started early labor, Jennifer gave me helpful hints to get some rest through the night. When labor seemed to start picking up early the next morning, Jennifer came over for support. I happened to stay in early labor throughout the morning, so over the next 6 hours Jennifer gave us some great ideas to speed up and establish labor. Once at the hospital, Jennifer was incredibly supportive in helping keep everyone informed about progress. She helped talk me through some intense moments to overcome fear, coached me through contractions, and suggested new positions to help me have a successful natural birth.
Her ability to read each situation was uncanny - she was present and supportive at the right times, and faded into the background at others. After our daughter was born, Jennifer’s calm presence helped get us through some scary moments. She stayed until we had established breastfeeding, a good 2 hours after our daughter was born. I’m not sure whether I could have had the same amazing natural birth without Jennifer. I will highly recommend her to anyone looking for a doula, and my husband and I won’t hesitate to hire her for any future children we have.
—Laurel M. My wife and I could not be happier with Jennifer. Her calm, focused, and professional—yet light-hearted—demeanor were exactly what we needed when our baby decided to arrive as a premature infant just over three weeks early. Although the early arrival meant that we ended up having a hospital birth (rather than the birthing center birth we had wanted), Jennifer was a tireless and effective advocate who ensured that our desire for a natural childbirth was preserved as much as possible. As a result, the hospital did not have to induce labor (as they initially thought would be necessary) or to give my wife an epidural (as she did not want one).
We felt comfortable with Jennifer throughout every stage of the process, and she was more than generous with her time in answering all of our first-time-parent questions. God willing, we hope we are able to use Jennifer again someday. We highly and unequivocally recommend her services.
—Joel S. Jennifer was my doula for my VBAC delivery. During our initial consultation she was knowledgable, friendly yet serious about her work. Leading up to the birth Jennifer was helpful with corresponding about my random questions, sent me book recommendations and even mailed me CDs to listen to with positive affirmations. We had an additional meeting a few weeks before my due date to touch base and talk through my ideal birth and my fears. During labor Jennifer was the perfect energy in the room. She remained totally focused on me when the rest of my team was exhausted. She was there for me completely, making sure I continued to drink liquids, having me get up and walk the halls, was there to lean on through painful contractions, applied counter pressure on my hips for hours and constantly reaffirmed I could do it. After delivery Jennifer stayed with me until the baby was breastfeeding and met with me a few weeks postpartum to check on me and answer questions I had not just about the baby but about the VBAC and digesting the entire birth experience. She is a wonderful doula and I highly recommend her services!
—Jennifer D. I hired Jennifer based on her strong recommendations and I agree now that she was well worth it! I had hoped for an unmedicated childbirth but ended up with an unusually long labor; after 24 hours of contractions that didn’t move me past 5cm (even thought my water had broken the previous day) I was told I needed Pitocin to help me along and I ended up opting for an epidural. Throughout the process Jennifer kept me and my husband informed of how I could help move things forward and what he could do to help ease the pain (and she did great back rubs with the rice sock when he needed a break!). She supported my wish for a natural childbirth during my marathon labor but was then equally helpful and supportive when I chose the epidural. The pushing phase also lasted over three hours because the baby was not positioned correctly. Having her there for the long haul was very comforting, given that my husband and I would have been alone almost the whole time otherwise (the nurses just checked in periodically and the doctor only arrived at the very end).
Her post-natal visit was also very helpful. I had a long list of questions for her after my first two weeks as a new mother and she had answers for all of them that have proven to be very useful. Overall, I found her to be extremely knowledgeable about the entire birth-through-baby process. I only wish I had contacted her earlier so I would have had time for her pre-labor visits to better prepare me for the labor experience.
—Megan M. We hired Jennifer fairly early in my pregnancy, around 5 months, so we had lots of time to work with her. I was looking for someone who would give me strength and as well as soothing support with a take charge attitude, and that was Jennifer.
During labor, Jennifer was amazing. My labor was 28 hours, ending with a c-section. Jennifer was with us every step of the way. She helped me labor at home for almost 11 hours and by the time I got to the hospital I was 6cm! She led me through labor with position suggestions, encouragement, reminders to drink fluids and so much more.
As labor became more intense, I relied heavily on her for help coping with pain. After 20+ hours of natural labor I decided it was time for an epidural. Jennifer came up with creative ideas to help labor progress with the epidural.
When pushing came, I was exhausted and the epidural had worn off. I found myself seeking out Jennifer’s voice above all. When my midwife began suggesting that interventions were needed I relied on Jennifer to help me make decisions.
While I was being prepped for my c-section, Jennifer was offering support to my husband and mother. She met me in the recovery room afterwards where she helped me with initial breastfeeding and made sure I was completely settled in before departing.
I continued to use Jennifer for support as I emailed and called her multiple times from the hospital. It was helpful to have someone I trusted to talk to about what the various nurses were telling me vs. the lactation consultant vs. pediatricians that changed daily.
After discharge I continued to talk to her via email leading up to our postpartum visit at home. Jennifer was by my side every step of the way during a long, tough labor. As a first time mom, I relied heavily on her during labor despite having the support of my husband, mother who is a nurse practitioner, my midwife and hospital staff.
I highly recommend Jennifer as a doula and hope to use her again in the future!
—Alice W. My husband and I hired Jennifer back in November as we were looking for a complete natural birth. Since we interviewed her, we were sure that she was the person that we were looking.
Through the following months, she visited us at home discussing a variety of topics. Not only had she reviewed with us what would happen during birth but also breastfeeding, baby care and relaxation. In fact, one of the best conversations that we had was when Jennifer opened a discussion between my husband and I about the people that we wanted staying at our house during the first months of our daughter (we are both from out the DC Metro area). This has been quite a sensitive topic during the pregnancy and Jennifer was an excellent mediator during that dialogue.
As my due date got close, I had problems with my baby being breech. Jennifer helped me with several materials that guided me to turn the baby. At the end, my water broke (unexpectedly) at work and Jennifer was the first person I called (even before my doctor!). At the end, I had to have a C-section. Even under these circumstances, Jennifer came to the hospital right away. She arrived probably about an hour after I called her. She stayed with us for good 12 hours explaining the process, checking on my possible contractions, keeping me relaxed during the multiple exams and, overall, being the friend and relative that my husband and I did not have present at the moment. Right after I had my baby Jennifer was on top, helping me with breastfeeding and bonding which was quite a job as I was coming back from general anesthesia.
Two weeks later, she came to my house and kept helping me with breastfeeding and baby care. My daughter and I had some breastfeeding issues but with Jennifer’s help we solved them right away.
Again, I totally recommend her. If I decide to get pregnant again (hopefully a VBAC), she will be my doula without any doubt!
—Marimar Jennifer is a wonderful doula, and my husband and I both highly recommend her. Terrific advice and help, and an interesting and good person to boot. Really outstanding in every respect.
My husband was originally skeptical about hiring a doula, but after our birthworks class, was open to the idea. We contacted Jennifer late in the process, and she met with us to talk about our birth plan and answer any questions several times before the due date. Once we got close, she kept up-to-date on our doctor visits, and promised that we could call her at any time of the day. Turns out we did. My water broke at 3 am, my husband called her at 4, and (given the timing of my contractions) we were all on the way to the hospital together by 4:45.
Jennifer worked with us & the hospital staff through 18 hours of labor to ensure that I was comfortable and informed at every step. She wasn't pushy with the doctors or nurses, which was important to us, and helped me labor in a number of different positions, including some that the nurse (who is studying to become a midwife) wrote down for future use. Jennifer also made some suggestions to the hospital staff that, ultimately, I believe helped me avoid having a C-section.
Jennifer was also helpful in ways that I wouldn't have initially expected. She explained what was going on to anxious grandparents, and she even stopped by the house a couple weeks after the birth of our daughter to check in, answer any questions, and provide postpartum advice.
We can't recommend Jennifer highly enough. She even converted my skeptical husband, who now thinks the investment in a doula was completely worthwhile. After I delivered our daughter, we both commented that we didn't know what we would've done without Jennifer's help. We will definitely use her again for any future children we might have.
Jennifer was extremely helpful during my 24plus hours of labor. Her knowledge and presence was a calming source for both my husband and I and it was a relief for us to have her with us during the long labor and delivery. I will highly recommend her to anyone who is in need of a doula. She was with my husband and I in the hospital from beginning to end and she helped guide me and motivate me during the intense experience.
—Meg D. I had a great experience with Jennifer Thorson during the recent birth of my son Layton and I'd highly recommend her. As a first time mom I found Jennifer to be the perfect combination of being deeply knowledgeable about motherhood and birthing while having the ability to be really genuine and reassuring. She is very passionate and sincere about her work and it showed during my delivery – my husband was serving in Afghanistan and could not be there for the birth so Jennifer went above and beyond to provide him constant updates and pictures over her phone while being fully present for me in the delivery room. My husband was touched that she was able to facilitate him feeling so involved even though he was 8,000 miles away. Jennifer has a calm and caring presence and is informative without being imposing. I wish every laboring woman could have a doula as talented and wonderful.
—Tiffany R. My husband and I met Jennifer at our Birth Works class that we were taking to prepare for the birth of our first child. We were so impressed by how much knowledge Jennifer possessed regarding the entire birth process that we felt she would be the perfect doula for us. Jennifer met with us twice before the labor and was available 24/7 via email and phone for questions and concerns we had at any time. This worked out really well for us because I did go into preterm labor and had to go to the hospital several times before giving birth. Knowing that I could speak to her at anytime with questions or concerns was very reassuring for me.
When I went into labor I called Jennifer immediately and then ended up going into the hospital a few hours later. She met us there and was extremely comforting to me as I worked through my contractions. Because of some complications, I had to have a C-section. This was disappointing for me as we had wanted an unmedicated birth, but having the support around me and knowing this was what needed to be done was comforting. Jennifer stayed with me until I had to go back to the O.R. and was with me as soon as I came out in recovery. She helped with breastfeeding right after the birth and stayed with us for several hours after.
Most recently, when my son turned 2 weeks old, Jennifer came by again to see how we were doing. This was extremely helpful as I have been having trouble breastfeeding. She stayed with us for a few hours and was able to get my son properly latched on and getting a full feeding in! I would highly recommend Jennifer for anyone who is looking for a doula and would definitely use her again in the future.
—Alyssa Jennifer was an amazing doula.
She put in so much effort to get my labor moving in the early stages, and really encouraged me when I needed it.
She was an invaluable asset in the labor room. Her expertise, encouragement, and comfort really helped me to remember why I made the choices in my birth plan, and stick to it as long as it was still reasonable. My daughter had an asynclitic presentation and we ended up going cesarian after 35 hours. Without Jennifer, I am not sure what choices I would have made, but I do know that if she wasnt there I always would have questioned those choices. She knew exactly when to be kind and when to be a little firm (in reminding me to snack or drink).
I know that my husband valued Jennifer as much or more than I did. She really encouraged him, so he didnt feel lost or like an observer of labor but a participant in it. She was able to give advice or take over as he needed, so he was free to take care of himself as well as me.
Labor was a facet of our marriage, and new family, that I will always treasure because Jennifer was there helping us be the best that we could be in a situation that was out of our control.
—Stephanie R. During my pregnancy I was praying and preparing for an unmedicated vaginal delivery and knew the only possibility to accomplish this was through the support of a doula.
My husband and I met with Jennifer twice in our home in March, she provided reading material that was informative and spent time getting to know us. Jennifer and I communicated on a regular basis starting in my 37th week; Jennifer was able to answer various medical questions that I had after the OB appointments.
My labor began on the morning of the 15th; Jennifer was available as soon as I needed her. Prior to her arrival at my home I began experiencing fear, tension and doubt in my ability to labor naturally. As soon as she arrived, Jennifer took control of my environment with confidence and a calming presence. Jennifer utilized various techniques to ease my pain during contractions, and I was able to relax and rest in between contractions. I had a quick labor and delivery that was unmedicated; I know that I could not have achieved my goal without the support of Jennifer.
—Kathleen H. My husband and I hired Jennifer to assist with the birth of our baby girl. This was our first child so neither of us knew exactly what to expect from the birthing experience. Jennifer helped us to prepare for the birth with her prenatal visits, then proved invaluable the day of the delivery.
I labored for eight hours before I took medication. I know that I could not have made it that far without her encouragement and various pain management techniques. Her hands on assistance and support throughout my labor made for a great birthing experience. I would highly recommend her to anyone looking for a knowledgeable and committed doula to assist with the birth of your baby.
—Jodi I just wanted to write a quick note to say thanks for all of your help in Margot's labor & delivery. It really could not have gone better, and having you talking with me throughout made a huge difference. I definitely remember your voice steadily guiding me through the process as things got really intense.
So, again, thanks for being there throughout – you were a great advocate and helped us make a lot of decisions, from when to go to the hospital to when to call in the midwife when it was time to push.
—Kate Excellent guidance and suggestions. Recommendations seemed like an experienced doula rather than one in training. Also had endurance to last a long labor with patience and calm.
—Brooke, R.N. Jennifer was a great advocate and coach for us during the labor and delivery of our son. She guided us through every step to help us have the birth experience we wanted. She helped us communicate with the nurses and doctors so that we understood everything that was happening and could make informed decisions.
Jennifer was with us from shortly after our arrival to the hospital until our baby boy was breastfeeding successfully. She clearly showed her dedication to us and genuinely cared about making sure our needs and wishes were met and that everybody was healthy. She did not impose any particular philosophies or methods on us, or on the healthcare team at the hospital – rather she listened to our beliefs, feelings and wishes, and helped us to make them work with hospital practices and what the doctors and nurses felt to be important from a medical standpoint.
Her knowledge and support proved to be even more valuable than we had anticipated – we are so glad we hired her for the birth of our first child and will probably be calling her when it's time for the next baby!
—Katie I highly recommend Jennifer as a Doula and coach. She is very knowledgeable and was a very calming presence both before and during labor. She had some excellent suggestions for me in terms of stretches and yoga during my pregnancy and worked with me to ensure we knew what I wanted in my birth plan. This was my second baby and the experience this time around was wonderful. We told her that we really wanted her to be our voice to the doctors and nurses (we were in a hospital) and to help ensure that we were being heard about our wishes. She was focused on us the whole time and was able to find out information or to ask questions of the staff that we didn't always remember to ask.
She was on call for us prior to labor beginning and helped us decide when to head to the hospital. Once there, she was such a calming presence. She made suggestions for positions for me to labor in which both were more comfortable as well as helping to move labor along. She also knew what we wanted (to try without drugs) and helped us to have that realized. I know she was also a big help to my husband - spelling him throughout labor and allowing him to take needed naps when we were up all night.
Jennifer Thorson is an excellent coach and Doula. If I were to have another child, I would ask her to assist in a heart beat.
—Kierstie

—Kierstie
